Today’s entry is a bit different than my usual entries are. How is it different you ask? Well I want to start off with a quote from Carl Sagan. “The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it but the way those atoms are arranged”. This is something that has inspired me to make an entry with something I try to avoid, personal beliefs.
So to start this off, first let me explain why I avoid this type of stuff. Everyone has an opinion on everything. That is what makes life great, but can also cause fights between people who could be the best of friends. The reason I avoid it online is because I rather not have it look like I am forcing this on people. There is no way to judge the tone of text.
There are facts that not be disputed. For example if I said that the sky is not really blue, but simply reflected light from the oceans, you cannot say that isn’t the truth and incorrect. However when I say that I think alien life does exist, well now that is an opinion.
So, what does this have to do with that quote? Technically, it’s not the quote, but who said it. Okay, so what does it have to do with Carl Sagan then? Well, that is why I gave the opening thing about opinions. I think that he was a brilliant man, and that he died way too young at 62. He believed, just as I do, that we are not alone. There are billions upon billions of stars out there. Some we know, like our own star the sun, do have their own planets. What we do not know however is do these planets have life!
Carl Sagan was a big supporter of SETI. What is SETI? It’s the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence. Some people may know that it’s the computer software that helps process the signals. What signals? The ones from the radio telescope! What is a radio telescope? Simply put, it’s a giant radio antenna. This giant dish antenna receives tons of static from distant parts of the universe all the time.
So, where does SETI come in here? What are they looking for amidst the static of space? They are looking for signs of life, intelligent enough to have developed radio transmissions. Well by the time we get these waves they are very old, so we may never know. I do not expect we will even know in my lifetime if we are truly alone as we think we are.
I got a hair cut today and we even picked up another gun, a small Ruger LCP in 380. The weather was nice here today and tomorrow will be showers then a lot of rain into Monday. I had fried meatballs for supper today as well.
